Project information

Volunteers committed to the project will work alongside the community, engaging various actors in society to ensure the fulfilment of everyone’s rights.

The Adult Community Centre and a group of young people dedicated to environmental and ocean conservation play a crucial role in Zanzibar. Environmental cleanliness and care for the surroundings are paramount in the community.
The community program will involve assisting the community depending on the inherent needs at the time of your stay. Therefore, activities will vary according to the community’s needs.

Your role

You will be expected to work from Monday – Friday, 5 hours a day.

Please note that the activity schedules may be both in the mornings and in the afternoons, varying on the community needs and period during your trip. Volunteers may engage in the following activities:

  • Beach cleaning & environmental maintenance
  • Awareness talks on the need for environmental and ocean conservation
  • English classes for adults: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the mornings at the community centre and in the afternoons at a local school in the area.
  • Collaborating in English classes for the women’s empowerment program
  • Assisting in local schools in the area if needed
  • Playing and teaching with children from the community in the afternoons at the community centre
  • Doing sports workshops in different villages with the community’s youth once a week.

It is important to note that this description serves as an example only. The daily tasks and challenges depend on the volunteer, the time of the year and the work that needs to be done. The final job description can therefore vary substantially from the above.

Our volunteer house offers numerous shared rooms for 4 to 8 people. The location is approximately a 10-minute walk from the beach. The house is situated in a very rural area where you can fully experience the authentic essence of an incredible island like Zanzibar.

You can use a “dala dala” bus to reach the closest big town, Paje, which is a 10-minute ride from the house. There, you’ll find ATMs, supermarkets, restaurants, and shops.

Meals

You will be provided with 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.
Vegetarian and special dietary options are available.
