Hot Dog Day sponsored by Good Hope Volunteers
Our wonderful volunteers pulled together to help make this a successful day by preparing hot dogs and playing with the children at the projects. Our first stop was the Special Needs Care Centre. The Special Needs Care Centre is a residential home caring for 80 profoundly intellectually and physically disabled residents and is situated in Cape Town, South Africa. Since its inception in 1976 the centre has worked diligently towards building a home of safety and security for its residents, all of whom require specialised care and who are unable to remain within their family units. The centre also fosters children who are wards of the state – these are children who have been neglected or abandoned by their families. Every month, the centre organises a monthly birthday party for all the birthdays that month. We sponsored 100 hot dogs for the special birthday bash!
Our second stop was the Recovery Hospital. The Recovery Hospital supports underprivileged families living in deprived areas who do not have the finances or the facilities to nurse their children after an acute illness or severe burns. This hospital is an essential link in the treatment of children, breaking the cycle of the recurrence of sometimes-fatal diseases. Besides basic medical care, the hospital is well equipped to provide rehabilitative services such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, nutritional rehab, psychological rehab and basic educational stimulation for children of school-going ages. The children are treated for various medical conditions arising from HIV and Aids, tuberculosis, malnutrition, etc. All of these children are cared for at this hospital. We delivered 50 hot dogs for the children's dinner!
The third and last stop was the Athlone Children's Home. The Athlone Children’s Home provides full-time care for up to 49 babies and children from 0 - 5 years old. The children are either neglected, abandoned, abused or orphaned and are accepted at the home irrespective of HIV status, race or gender. We prepared 50 hot dogs for this project, but it was ice cream time after nap time! Volunteers helped hand out ice creams to all the children and spent time playing with them before dinner time.
Mission accomplished, 200 hot dogs, 3 projects, 200 children, 1 day!
