Fire in Hout Bay
On Saturday the 11th of March 2017, the IY community was devastated by a raging fire which swept through the informal settlements. 4 people lost their lives and over 15 000 people lost their homes and possessions. Families desperately struggled against the blaze, trying to salvage what they could, while the Cape Town rescue services worked tirelessly to secure the area.
Over the week that followed Capetonians opened their hearts and their homes and the astounding financial support offered to rebuild this community touched us all. Tons of donations poured in from all corners of the city. Food, clothing, equipment, fresh water and everything else that would be required to replace and rebuild. The spirit of giving in Cape Town is one thing that Good Hope Volunteers believes in wholeheartedly, and we welcome international travellers, who share the same passion.
