Your Personal Safety

Southern Africa is an area of infinite diversity - rich cultures, spectacular natural beauty and an untamed wilderness that lends itself very well to the young international traveller. When travelling in Southern Africa, however, like any other major developing nation, there are a number of key things to remember with regards to personal safety. 

During the application process you will be given our Volunteer Handbook which not only gives information regarding your project but also informs you on what to expect when you arrive and some tips on health, safety and welfare in Southern Africa. Our helpful volunteer coordinators will also be on hand to make sure all the information you and your family need is comprehensive and easy to understand. 

On arrival, you will be met by our friendly staff and taken to your accommodation, either at our Volunteer House in Cape Town or at the project accommodation of your chosen site. Your first couple of days, either in Cape Town or at one of our many partner projects, will include a comprehensive orientation, which covers a number of the key points outlined in the handbook. Our staff work tirelessly to make sure all the information we present to you adheres with international standards and the most current and updated international governmental protocol. 

Important safety tips

  • Always keep your valuables locked in your rooms, preferably in a safe. If you don’t need it, don’t bring it!
  • Never use public transport after dark. Always remain vigilant in public areas of your personal space and your belongings.
  • Never walk alone in deserted areas at night.
  • Be sure to let your volunteer coordinator know if you are taking a trip, where you are going, and when you are expected back.
  • Always carry a copy of your medical insurance and our medical emergency numbers with you.
  • Carry a copy of your passport with you and not your original.
  • When using ATMs, always use ATM’s inside shopping centres. Draw small amounts of cash at a time, and never carry all your money and all your debit/credit cards at once.
